Recently, Chris Cuomo closed out an episode of his prime time program on CNN with this statement:
“If you believe in one another, and if you do the right thing for yourself and your community, things will get better in this country. You don’t need help from above— It’s within us.”
The fatal mistake made by any nation blessed by God, is that they eventually reject any dependency they have had on Him in the past.
This is fatal because when a society gets to this point and collectively declare that they don’t need God, they are simultaneously saying, “We are God.” — thus breaking the 1st commandment: “You must not have any other god but me.”
Their faith rests in themselves— in their strength, intelligence, accomplishments and wealth.
God warned Israel of this very thing as recorded in the 8th chapter of Deuteronomy:
“… Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him. For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—
… When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.
Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery…
You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”
Then the Lord says this:
“If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. Like the nations the Lord destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the Lord your God.”
Read that closely— because that promise is for The United States as well.
So, before we fall as a nation, we must turn away from pride and faith in ourselves and turn to God in repentance, and place our faith in Christ alone.
For if the collective heart of this country continues to proclaim its strength apart from God, then our arrogance will soon be our downfall— Try as we might to “fix this” Jesus Christ himself says, “Apart from me, you can do nothing.”
“Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall.” – Proverbs 16:18
